Alfred Sutton School War Memorial

Alfred Sutton School War Memorial Evan L Davies plaque

The young men named on the Alfred Sutton School War Memorial all attended the Wokingham Road School which opened in 1902.  The name of the school changed to Alfred Sutton School in 1923 and it is still known by that name. All the men listed on the memorial and the teacher Evan Lloyd Davies who is named on the plaque below the memorial have a place on this website. Three man are buried in the Old Reading cemetery and four others have their names commemorated on the headstones of family graves. Reginald Gatehouse is also buried in a local church yard. The story of the school, their teacher and the young men has been told in “The School, the Master, the Boys and the V.C.” which is an unpublished manuscript by the website author. Reading V.C. Trooper Frederick Owen Potts story is also told in the manuscript because he attended the Wokingham Road school for two terms. Copies of the manuscript are held in Reading  Central library and Palmer Park library which is close to the Old Reading cemetery.
